Chang Wins Championship In Troy Spring Kick-Off Tournament

Claire Chang was named the flight one singles champion in the Spring Kick-Off hosted by Troy University in Troy, Ala.
"Claire showed this weekend the potential that she has. She went undefeated at the number one spot, playing against extremely tough competition, so I am very proud and happy for her with the way she handled things on the court," said head coach Jorge Caetano on Chang's performance.
Originally a two day tournament, cold weather stretched it out to three, with Murray State, Troy University, Central Arkansas and Louisiana Tech battling at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
Day One Results
Murray State matched up with Louisiana Tech on Saturday, as Chang started red hot, winning in two sets, both going 6-2. Aarja Chakraborty and Jeanne Masson both won their first day singles match in two sets as well, with Chakraborty winning 6-2 in both sets and Masson winning 7-5 and 6-0.
The Racers weren't able to secure any wins in doubles on the first day, with the closest match coming down to a point, as Sarah Bjork and Masson losing lost 7-6 to Central Arkansas.
Day Two Results
The Racers were matched up against Troy in singles on Sunday, with Chakraborty and Chang securing wins. Chakraborty won in a three-set match, losing the first 1-6 and winning the last two 6-2 and 10-6, while Chang won in two sets7-5 and 6-2 inÂ
In the only doubles match of the day for the Racers, Chang and Hadzic came away with a clean 6-0 win over their Louisiana Tech counter parts.
Day Three Results
On the third and final day of competition, it was Central Arkansas on the docket for singles, as the Racers picked up wins in four of the five matches.
Chang and Hadzic picked up wins both due to injured players. Â
Stasya Sharapova battled her way to a win in three sets, splitting the first two with a win of 7-5 and a loss of 5-7, while winning 10-7 in the third set. Sara Loncarevic closed out singles play with a win in two sets, winning 6-4 and 6-1.
The two wins in doubles for the Racers against Troy on day three both came to injured players.
"We had a short fall season so the girls couldn't' wait for this tournament. It was a great first one for us, we had a lot of quality wins and also some tough losses that are going to make us better," said Caetano on his thoughts of the tournament.
Murray State will play Middle Tennessee next, as they travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Saturday, January 20.
