The Racers scored their first road win of the season Saturday in a 64-42 win over Middle Tennessee. The Racers used a 17-1 run the first half to take control of the game and eventually led by as many as 30 points. Shaq Buchanan set career-highs for points (21) and steals (7) in the Racer win, while freshman Tevin Brown scored 15. Ja Morant enters the week as the second leading scorer in the Ohio Valley Conference (14th in NCAA D-I) after being held to nine points, which marked just the eighth time in 38 career games in which he scored less than 10. Morant otherwise has had a brilliant sophomore season including a 38-point performance at Alabama and against Missouri State, one of the 14 triple-doubles this season in NCAA D-I. Morant, the Racers' next stat stuffing star, follows in the footsteps of all-star MSU guards before him including Isaiah Canaan (2009-13), Cameron Payne (2013-15) and Jonathan Stark (2015-18). Morant is third in the nation with 8.2 assists per game.
The Murray State-Southern Illinois series is playing for a sixth-straight season as the Racers have won 3-of-5 since 2013, including a win at the SIU Arena in 2014. The last time these two tangled in Carbondale, the Salukis outlasted the Racers with an overtime win 89-85. The Racers beat SIU at home in 2017 by a score of 81-73.Â
Having already defeated Missouri State, Â the Racers play Missouri Valley Conference teams this season. This season is the eighth-straight in which the Racers have played a MVC team. Next week (Dec. 18) the Racers host Evansville. The Racers have a long history of facing teams from the MVC with the majority against the Purple Aces (37 games) and Southern Illinois (35 meetings). The only team from the current MVC lineup the Racers haven't faced is Northern Iowa.
