Just The Facts
The Murray State softball team came up short in hard-fought 3-1 loss to South Alabama Sunday, in the final game of the 2018 February Freezer at Nusz Park in Starkville, Mississippi.
How It Happened
The Jags jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the contest, thanks to a RBI fielder's choice from Morgan Lutticken in the second and a solo home run from Brittani Reid in the fifth. The Racers finally found their way to the score scoreboard in the sixth on a RBI-double from Madison Culver that scored Brenna Finck. However, in the bottom of the frame USA got the run back on a single from Lyric Cabral and then held on for the 3-1 win.
In The Circle
Olivia Suski fell to 0-3 on the year in the game by giving up two earned runs on four hits with one strikeout, but no walks. Grace Vaughn went 0.2 innings for MSU and gave up a run on three hits, while Haven Campbell finished out the final 0.2 innings and allowed only one hit. Devin Brown was effective for the Jaguars as she limited Murray State to one run on just three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts over a complete game effort.
Offensive Highlights
On top of driving in the lone run of the day for Murray State, Culver was also the only Racer to tally multiple hits, by going 2-for-3, and to have an extra base hit Sunday. Jensen Striegel had the only other for Murray State in the contest, a single in the sixth that helped move Finck around the bases.
OK, What's Next?
Murray State will travel south next weekend to participate in the Trojan Classic in Troy, Alabama. While in Troy the Racers will take on OVC rival Tennessee Tech, regional foe UAB and host Troy.
