The Murray State soccer team kicked off their five-game road trip with a double overtime draw against the Chattanooga Mocs on Friday at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tennessee.Â
Miyah Watford got the Racers' offense in motion after sending an impressive shot into the upper left post and leaving no room for Chattanooga's goalkeeper to make a play. Watford's score, her sixth of the season, gave Murray State a 1-0 advantage in the ninth minute.Â
MSU did not maintain the lead too long, as UTC's Catherine Meyer controlled a pass from Macey Fox in the box, and sent the ball past a diving Alex Steigerwald for the score in the 34th minute. After the score, both squads headed into the locker room tied at one.
The Mocs quickly gained the upper hand coming out of halftime intermission when they scored their second goal after Maggie Shaw zipped a shot past MSU's defenders to give UTC a 2-1 lead.Â
Chattanooga maintained the 2-1 lead until the 84:54 mark when Abby Jones launched a corner kick into the box for the Racers and found Cori Cain for the header to tie the game two-all. Â Cain's goal was her first on the season and helped the Racers send the match into overtime. Â
While Murray State and Chattanooga continued to push for a scoring opportunity, neither squad could manage to find the back of the net during the first overtime, resulting in a 10-minute double overtime period. Both teams continued to battle on both sides of the field but ended the contest in a 2-2 draw.Â
"Chattanooga was a good team, and it took us a while to get adjusted to how they played," said MSU head coach Matt Lodge. "I am happy with how well we moved it around in the second half." Â
The Racers finished with 21 shots during the contest with 11 being on the net, while UTC recorded 17 shots of their own and 12 on goal. Senior goalkeeper Alex Steigerwald earned ten saves on the day.Â
Following the draw, the Racers are now 4-1-1 on the season heading into their first match of conference play next weekend against Southeast Missouri (Sept. 13). MSU then plays Georgia (Sept. 16) before heading to Illinois to complete their five-game road stretch in OVC action against Eastern Illinois (Sept. 21) and SIUE (Sept. 23). Murray State will finally return home to take on Tennessee Tech (Sept. 28) and Jacksonville State (Sept. 30) at Cutchin Field to round out September.
