The Murray State Racers (15-2, 6-0 OVC) are back at home in the CFSB Center for the first time in 19 days when they host the Belmont Bruins (13-4, 4-2 OVC) in an 8 p.m. game in Murray, Ky. The Racers have won seven in a row and their last 18 games at the CFSB Center.
Froggy 103 (WFGS 103.7 FM) airs every MSU game with "Voice of the Racers" Neal Bradley calling the action in his 28th season. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides commentary. Tom Hart and Coach Seth Greenberg call the action on ESPNU and Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com has free online streaming audio. The game can also be seen online at Watch ESPN.
Ja Morant continues to amaze everywhere he goes and enters the week by winning his sixth OVC Player of the Week honor after he became the first Division I player in the past 20 years to have 40 points, 11 assists and five steals in a game as the Racers won Saturday at SIUE. The sophomore hit 21-of-21 free throws in the game, establishing a new OVC record for most made free throws in a game without a miss. A week ago at Eastern Illinois, Morant had a stat line of 27 points, 10 assists, three rebounds, a block and steal. Morant is tops in the nation with 10.7 assists per game and total assists at 182. He is seventh in the nation with a scoring average of 24.3. Morant is only 30 assists from setting the MSU single season mark. Morant was also honored this week as the The USBWA Oscar Robertson National Players of the Week. The award has been given since the 2009-10 season and Morant is the second OVC player to win the award, joining Morehead State's Kenneth Faried (Feb. 1, 2011).
The Racers are far from a one-man show. Shaq Buchanan is 13th in the OVC with 13.8 points per game and he's tops in steals and is one of the candidates to become OVC Defensive Player of the Year. Tevin Brown tied the MSU record with nine made 3-pointers (Jan. 10) at UT Martin and is scoring 12.4 points per game. The Racers also have an impressive inside game with KJ Williams and Darnell Cowart who rank first and fifth in OVC games at 70 percent (28-of-40) and 58 percent (29-of-50). Brown and Williams give the Racers two candidates to become OVC Freshman of the Year.
For as much as their scoring ability gets the spotlight, the Racers are winning because they can also defend well. MSU is sixth in the nation in holding opponents to 27 percent from the 3-point line (129-of-354) and 32nd nationally in defensive field goal percentage as they limit opponents to 40 percent (462-of-919).
