Thursday night, the Racers saw their seven-game win streak and run of 17 consecutive wins in the Ohio Valley Conference come to an end in a 79-66 defeat to the Belmont Bruins. A record crowd of 8,969 in the 21 seasons of the CFSB Center watched it in Murray, Kentucky.
Ja Morant led the way for the Racers with 20 points, but had a rough night in going 5-of-19 from the field and he finished one assist from a double-double. Darnell Cowart scored 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in 24 minutes. MSU's other double-digit scorers were Tevin Brown and Shaq Buchanan who each tallied 11 points.
Cowart was a bright spot for the Racers against the Bruins as he scored all of his 14 points in the second half as he grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. Cowart hit 4-of-5 shots in the second half and was 6-of-10 from the free throw line. Â
The Racers' 18-game home winning streak was also halted in this game as a record crowd of 8,969 watched it.Â
The announced crowd bested the former top crowd in the 21 seasons of the CFSB Center. The former mark came on Feb. 18, 2012 when a crowd of 8,825 watched the Racers defeat Saint Mary's in a BracketBuster game. Six of MSU's best crowds at The Bank occurred in the amazing 2011-12 season when the Racers went 31-2 and were the final undefeated team in the nation at 23-0.
The Racers hit the road next week for a Thursday (Jan. 31) game at Jacksonville State before playing Saturday (Feb. 2) at Tennessee Tech. The Racers return home to face Eastern Illinois (Feb. 7) and SIUE (Feb. 9).
