Giustino, Fernandez Claim OVC Honors

The Murray State volleyball team continued its stretch of accumulating individual accolades this week as senior Rachel Giustino and junior Becca Fernandez were named OVC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week.
For Giustino, it is the second straight week she has won the award and fourth time overall while Fernandez picks up her second of the season. Overall, the Racers now have seven weekly awards from the OVC this season as Ashley McBee took home Setter of the Week on September 9th.
Giustino once again led the OVC in kills this past week, averaging 5.67 per set. She had her second 30-kill performance of the season against Austin Peay while hitting .472 and followed that up with 21 kills against Eastern Kentucky. She also had double-doubles in each match with 12 digs versus APSU and 16 digs against EKU. Overall this season, Giustino leads the OVC and is fourth in the nation with 5.37 kills per set.
Fernandez claimed her second Defensive Player of the Week award of the season and fifth of her career after recording 47 digs in two matches for an average of 5.22 per set.  In the win over Austin Peay, she notched 23 digs in four sets and followed that up with 24 at Eastern Kentucky. She also went a perfect 38-38 on serve receptions and chipped in 12 assists in the two matches. On the season, Fernandez leads the OVC with 5.20 digs per set, the only player in the conference averaging over five, and is 19th in the country.
Giustino, Fernandez, and the rest of the Racers will return to action this weekend when they host Belmont, Friday, and Tennessee State, Saturday, as part of Homecoming Weekend. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 6 p.m.
