The Murray State rifle team got its 2019-20 season off to a good start as it defeated Jacksonville State and UT Martin Sunday at Pat Spurgin Rile Range  in Murray, Kentucky. The Racers led the way in the tri-match with an aggregate score of 4652, followed by Jacksonville State at 4640 and UT Martin at 4593.
"It was a first match," said head coach Alan Lollar after the match. "We needed it to be able to plan training for the next step. Meike and Dana showed up well today, as both have been consistent with their training."
Murray State actually trailed Jacksonville State after smallbore, as the Gamecock outshot the Racers in the event, 2316-2304. However, in air rifle, the Racers turned up the heat and bested JSU's event score by 24 shots, 2348-2324, sealing the win in the process.
Meike Drewell led all shooters in the match with an 1167, after firing a 584 in smallbore and a 585 in air rifle. Dana Buesseler finished just one shot behind Drewell using a team-high 591 in air rifle to pair with her 577 in smallbore for a total of 1168.
Shelby Huber used a 574 smallbore and a 583 air rifle to finish third for Murray State with an 1157, while Emily Fitzgerald and Anna Scheer each shot an 1150 to round out the counters. Fitzgerald went 569 in smallbore and 581 in air rifle to get to her score, while Scheer went 561 in smallbore and 589 in air rifle. Freshman Chole Odle had the high non-counter score of the day, as she shot a very impressive 588 in air rifle.
The Racers return to Pat Spurgin Rifle Range next Saturday when they host perennial power, in-state rival and 2018 NCAA National Champion Kentucky in shoulder-to-shoulder action.
