Murray State track and field assistant coach, Kelsey Riggins, is set to speak at the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) convention on Monday, December 16 in Orlando, Florida.
"I am honored to be speaking at the Women in Coaching Seminar at the USTFCCCA convention," said Riggins. "It is a part of the convention that I look forward to every year and being able to play a more active role this year is exciting."
Riggins' presentation is called The Double Shift: Excelling at Coaching and Motherhood. She will be leading the discussion with former University of Minnesota teammate and current Golden Gopher assistant coach Sarah Hopkins. It is one of five presentations as part of the Women in Coaching Seminar.
"Keeping women in coaching - college, high school, club - is a passion of mine," continued Riggins. "I think women have a lot to bring to the table and often times they feel like they have to choose between motherhood and their career."
Riggins is in her fourth season as an assistant coach and primarily works with jumpers, pole vaulters, and multi-event athletes. She was a nominee for the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2019 after helping Murray State to an OVC Outdoor Track and Field title, which included a podium sweep of the heptathlon and co-champions in the pole vault.
This is nothing new for Riggins as she has been a part of the USTFCCCA Female Coaches Mentorship Program for the past two years, mentoring young women and new women to coaching Track & Field. She has also played a big role in mentoring young women at Murray State as she started the Women's Empowerment and Education (WEE) program at MSU for female student-athletes promoting empowerment through education. They had their first event in October and will be having their next one on February 3rd.
This will also be the first of two presentations Riggins does this school year as she is scheduled to speak at the WISTCA Clinic's Women4Women Event in Madison, Wisconsin in February. She will do a presentation on Women in Track Coaching as well as two technical symposiums on the pole vault and multi events for the general clinic on day two.
