Non-Conference Play Coming To An End For 2019
The Racers are coming off a game that makes one feel good about college basketball. In front of more than 7,000 fans at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana (Dec. 21) Murray State and UE engaged in a tremendous battle that saw each team give their all and at the same time exhibit great sportsmanship. When the final buzzer sounded, the Racers fell in overtime 78-76. In the pre-conference portion of the season, the Racers have fielded a mostly underclassmen team and have had those expected ups and downs through 11 games. The highlights have included a brilliant first half at Tennessee (Nov. 12), a convincing home win over Southern Illinois (Nov. 19) and a 51-point half against MTSU (Dec. 7). MSU also narrowly missed road wins at Missouri State (Dec. 3) and of course, Saturday at UE. From a personnel standpoint, the Racers have seen Tevin Brown and KJ Williams perform at an All-OVC level, but still hope for consistency. On the job training for Chico Carter, Jr., DaQuan Smith and Demond Robinson has been positive as the solid role play by Anthony Smith, Jaiveon Eaves and Devin Gilmore has been. MSU is still hopefully to get Darnell Cowart back in top form and have a run at the OVC title in 2020.
Big Shot Tevin Brown Strikes Again
It was a thing of beauty, especially for the college hoops observer with a keen eye for it. With the game on the line (Dec. 21) at Evansville, the Racers were down by three points after DeAndre Williams had just made a long 3-point shot with 13.1 seconds remaining. Murray State's Tevin Brown had one card up his sleeve and he played it at the buzzer. His fourth 3-point basket of the day pushed the Racers into overtime before falling by two points. Brown ended up matching his career-high of 31 points as he made it to the free throw line 15 times and made 11. His other 31-point effort game last January at UTM (01-10-19) when he tied a school record with nine 3-pointers.
Home Sweet Home - The Bank
In the 22nd season of basketball at the CFSB Center, the Racers carry an 11-game home win streak in the arena affectionately called "The Bank". With a winning percentage of 85 percent, the Racers home office has proved to be a hard place for visiting teams. The top home win streak of all-time for MSU remains the 47 in a row that closed down Racer Arena and opened the CFSB Center in 1998. MSU went 1,470 days between home losses from January 1996 to January 2000.
