Racers Open 72nd OVC Season
The Murray State Racers (7-5) host the UT Martin Skyhawks (4-7) in the Ohio Valley Conference opener at 7 p.m. at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky. The game is the second game of a doubleheader with the men's game following the 5 p.m. start of the women's game with UTM. It's January and that means it is time to go back to familiar things. In the OVC, the players know each other and so do the coaches. The gyms and arenas are well known and there is the all-important familiarity that breeds great competition. The kind competition kids experience on the playground. Of course, all of these factors make conference play a lot of fun for the fans as the 72nd season of collegiate men's basketball in the OVC begins in 2020. The Racers are in a spot to write yet another dominating period for the program by winning their third consecutive OVC regular season championship. The last time MSU accomplished a three-peat, it was Coach Billy Kennedy and Coach Steve Prohm winning titles in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
The nine-week grind will produce the OVC champion and complete the 2020 OVC Tournament bracket. Once again, the OVC Tourney will be contested at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana. With great play over the next nine weeks, the Racers can give themselves a chance to win the event for a third-straight season and make a third-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. If the Racers can get to the NCAA Tournament, it will be the first time since Coach Mark Gottfried and Coach Tevester Anderson took the Racers to the Big Dance in 1997, 1998 and 1999.
