The Murray State track and field team competed on day one of the 2019 OVC Indoor Championship, Wednesday and the Racers saw many student-athletes put up top marks as well others qualifying for finals tomorrow.
"Today was all-around a good day one for us," said head coach Adam Kiesler. "We had numerous kids step up to help the team and set season bests or personal bests at the most important time. There were a few things that we wish would have broken our way, but this team has done a great job of picking each other up and we expect that again tomorrow.
The weight throw began the day with Jewel Wagner being the top performer for the Racers. The junior put up a personal best with a throw of 16.70m, good enough for a sixth-place finish.
The long jump saw two Races finish in the top ten as Jabreuna Brimlett finished seventh with a jump of 5.59m and was followed closely behind by OVC Freshman of the Year Ashlyn Oren, who finished eighth with a personal-best jump of 5.56m.
In the high jump, Oren was again one of two Racers to finish in the top ten as she finished fourth with a personal-best matching jump of 1.70m. Senior Aubrey Main was one spot ahead of her in third as she set a personal best with a jump of 1.73m.
On the track, most of the races were preliminaries for the right to advance to the final tomorrow and Murray State put on a great showing as they will a have runner in every race tomorrow.
Tamdra Lawrence and Norma Abdur-Rafia will be in two events tomorrow as Lawrence qualified first in the 200m (24.29) and second in the 60m (7.53) while Abdur-Rafia was sixth in the 200m (24.56) and seventh in the 400m (56.96).
Joining those two tomorrow will be Brimlett (8.47) and Dontavia Howard (8.87, PR) in the 60m hurdles, Antoinetta Avant (7.65, PR) in the 60m, and Hilary McAdam (2:17.35) in the 800m.

The Racers head back to the Birmingham CrossPlex tomorrow for day two of the OVC Championships with heptathlon set to kick things off at 9 a.m.
