Morant Continues Award Circuit Friday In Los Angeles

Murray State's Ja Morant has been on the awards tour as college basketball hands out postseason hardware.
Last week at the Final Four in Minneapolis, Morant was part of the awards when he was named the CollegeInsider.com winner of the Lute Olson National Player of the Year and he was a finalist for the Naismith Award.
This weekend, Morant is traveling to California to be part of the College Basketball Awards as the John R. Wooden Award and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame bring attention to the top players in the college game. ESPN2 carries the event live at 7 p.m. CT.
Morant is one of the favorites to win the Bob Cousy Award for best point guard in the nation. He's also part of the Wooden Award All-America Team and one of the finalists for the Wooden National Player of the Year Award.
Other awards being given Friday include The Karl Malone Award (Power Forward of the Year), The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center of the Year), The Julius Erving Award Presented by Daltile (Small Forward of the Year) and The Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard of the Year).
After declaring for the NBA Draft two weeks ago, Morant is now preparing for life as a professional. His career however, will live on as one that is the best in the history of the Racer Basketball, not only in wins, statistics and awards, but also in the amount of attention he brought to Murray State University.
Morant is a consensus All-America after he was named to the Associated Press All-America First Team. He's the third consensus All-America in Ohio Valley Conference history following Clem Haskins in 1967 and Jim McDaniels in 1971, each from Western Kentucky.
Morant's season ended with him becoming the first player since the NCAA made the assist an official stat in the 1983-84 season to average 20 points and 10 assists. He was the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and led the Murray State Racers to the NCAA Tournament where they scored their 28th win of the season with a first round victory over Marquette. Morant posted just the ninth triple-double in NCAA Tournament play with 17 points, 16 assists and 11 rebounds.
He finished the season with 331 assists, the sixth-most in NCAA single-season history and tops in a single-season at MSU. He set the MSU career assist record in only two seasons. Morant's 808 points is also a Murray State single-season record.
