Murray State Splits With Redhawks in Reagan Day Doubleheader
4/12/2019 10:48:00 PM | Baseball
On the day the Murray State baseball program honored its late former head coach Johnny Reagan by unveiling his number 36 on the left field wall in front of his family and many former players, the current version of the team split with Southeast Missouri in a doubleheader. The Racers took game one 9-5 before falling in the nightcap, 4-2.
Murray State's record now sits at 15-17 overall and 9-5 in the OVC while SEMO goes to 16-19 and 6-11 in conference play.
Game One
In the first game of the day, the Racers used a big seven-run third inning to take a big early lead and never looked back as they won 9-5.
Coming off a complete-game win in his last outing, Trevor McMurray threw six innings while allowing just two runs and striking out six to earn his second win of the season.
Ryan Perkins was the offensive player of the game, collecting a season-high three hits while driving in three runs. Perkins was not the only offensive star of the game, however, as Brock Anderson had two hits and two runs scored in his return to the lineup and Bryan Chilton hit his first home run of the season.
After two scoreless innings, the Racers jumped out to the lead in the third. The inning started with a double by Jordan Holly and walk to Tyler Duke. Anderson drove in the first run of the game with a single before Wes Schad drove in two more with a double down the left-field line. Ryan Perkins followed with an RBI single and Jaron Robinson made it 5-0 with a double off the wall before Chilton capped the inning with a two-run round-tripper.
Murray State added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, each on singles by Perkins.
SEMO scored all their runs in the final three innings trying to rally but ran out of time as the Racers held on for the victory.
Game Two
Donning the throwback 'Breds jerseys for game two, Murray State had chances early to take the lead, but were unable to capitalize, allowing SEMO to take the game, 4-2.
Jake Jones, Gray Dorsey, and Justin Thomas each threw multiple innings allowing just one earned run each to keep the Thoroughbreds in the game.
Jordan Cozart, Vito Iovino and Jordan Holly all had two hits with Cozart and Iovino picking up the only two runs batted in for the 'Breds in the game.
Neither team could get a big hit early in the game, but the Redhawks were able to find a way to take a 3-0 lead into the seventh-inning stretch.
The 'Breds had their chances early in the game, putting runners on base in five of the first six innings, but were unable to push a run across until the seventh when Robinson and Iovino led off the inning with a double and a single, respectively, to plate MSU's first run.
Southeast Missouri got the run back in the eighth, but the 'Breds answered back in the bottom of the inning as Cozart delivered a run-scoring single.
In the ninth, MSU put two runners on, but on an attempted double steal, batter's interference was called, ending the game.
The two teams will attempt to finish the three-game series tomorrow at noon. Make sure to follow @RacersBaseball on twitter for updates regarding schedule changes.
