Belmont Rallies Late to Take Down Racers

The Murray State baseball team could not hold on to a 5-0 lead against Belmont, Thursday, as the Bruins score nine runs in the final three innings to win 9-6.
Ryan Perkins hit two home runs and Brock Anderson went 3-5 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the offense. Tyler Duke and Jaron Robinson also added two hits of their own.
On the mound, Joe Ivey got the start and threw six scoreless innings before the Bruins got the junior in the seventh with three runs.
The scoring started early for the Racers as Anderson laced an RBI triple down the right-field line in the first inning before he came around to score himself on a sacrifice fly by Wes Schad. Perkins tacked on the third run of the inning with an opposite-field home run to left.
Murray State added two more runs in the fifth when Anderson doubled to lead off the inning before eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Following the wild pitch, Perkins mashed his second home run of the game, and third in four at-bats dating back to last game, to nearly the same spot he hit his first one of the game.
Ivey worked out of a bases-loaded jam but could not keep the Bruins off the board in the seventh as a two-run triple and a wild pitch made it a 5-3 game.
The Racers got a run back in the eighth when Jordan Cozart extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a leadoff double before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by CJ Bush.
The insurance proved to not be enough as Belmont tied the game before taking the lead on a bases-loaded three-run double.
In the ninth, the Racers had the tying run at the plate but were unable to push across any runs as Belmont held on to win.
The two teams will play game two tomorrow at 11 a.m. The game was pushed up from a 4 p.m. start to try to beat the incoming rain.
