The Murray State baseball team allowed just four runs in 18 innings, Saturday afternoon, but had to settle for a split in a doubleheader with UT Martin at Reagan Field. The Racers took game one, 5-2, but fell in game two, 2-1.
The Racers now sit at 21-26 overall and 14-12 in the OVC while UT Martin goes to 21-28 and 9-17 in conference play.
In game one, Gray Dorsey threw four innings and allowed just two runs while striking out four. Joe Ivey came out of the bullpen and threw five scoreless innings, allowing just one infield hit along the way to earn his team-leading fifth win of the season.
Brock Anderson and Jordan Cozart each hit two-run home runs in the game to lead the offense.
Ryan Perkins led off the game with a nine-pitch walked and was rewarded as he came around to score three batters later on Cozart's home run to give the Racers an early 2-0 lead.
The Skyhawks tied the game in the third with the help of two Racer errors, but MSU retook the lead in the fourth as Anderson doubled to lead off the inning before coming around to score on a single by Cozart.
The score remained the same until the eighth when Anderson crushed his 11th home run of the season to give the Racers a 5-2 lead heading to the ninth, where Ivey mowed down the Skyhawks in order.
In game two, Trevor McMurray pitched 7.1 innings with seven strikeouts, but was the tough-luck loser as he allowed two runs (one earned) in the eighth inning.
The Racer offense could not do much all game as they only had two hits and had runners on base in just two innings.
After being held hitless through the first five innings, Jordan Holly and Ryan Perkins both singled to lead off the sixth to set up first and third and nobody out. Jaron Robinson then gave the Racers the lead as he hit a fly ball to shallow left field that the shortstop caught, but with Holly's speed at third, he was able to beat the throw home.
With rain in the forecast for Saturday, the final game for this series will either be played tomorrow night or on Sunday. A final decision is expected to be made Saturday morning.
