Racers Fall To SIUE in Regular Season Finale

The Murray State baseball team dropped its regular season finale, Saturday afternoon to SIU Edwardsville by a score of 11-9.
The Racers finish the regular season with a 23-28 overall record and a 16-14 OVC record, the best record in conference play for Murray State since 2010 when they went 12-8-1.
MSU will open the 2019 OVC Tournament, Wednesday morning against Belmont. First pitch in Marion, Illinois is scheduled for 9 a.m.
This afternoon against the Cougars, the Racers held a 9-5 lead going to the seventh, but SIUE scored six runs in the seventh with some help from heavy winds and a bright sun to take a lead they would not give up.
Jonah Brannon hit his first career home run and along with Sean Darmafall, led the team with two RBI. Jaron Robinson also collected two hits in the game to bring him to 199 for his career.
After both teams went down quickly in the first, SIUE took a 1-0 lead in the second on a home run by Justin Perkins.
The Racers responded in the third with three runs with a run-scoring groundout by Robinson and two-run error by the Cougars.
SIUE scored four runs in the fourth to retake the lead, but again the Racers responded in their next at-bat with six runs.
Jordan Cozart started the rally with a run-scoring double before Darmafall singled to drive in two more runs, giving the Racers a 6-5 lead. After Wes Schad hit a ground-rule double to make it 7-5, Brannon connected on the 10th pitch of his at-bat for a two-run home run.
Connor Holden pitched a scoreless sixth inning, but in the seventh, the Cougars used a high pop-up into the wind that dropped and a ball that was lost in the sun to score six runs and take the lead.
MSU threatened in the eighth but could not push across a run before going down in order in the ninth to end the game.
