For the first time this season, Becca Fernandez has been named the OVC Defensive Player of the Week after putting up monster numbers at Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville, helping the Racers to a 2-0 start in OVC play.
Fernandez had her best weekend of the season as she averaged 7.67 digs per set in the two matches against the Panthers and Cougars. Against EIU, she notched 19 digs and also added two service aces. Against SIUE, she averaged nine digs per set for a total of 27 in just three sets.
This is not the first time Fernandez has taken home the honor, having done so three times as a sophomore in 2018. She also joins Rachel Giustino and Ashley McBee as OVC Player of the Week recipients in 2019 as Giustino has been named Offensive Player of the Week twice while McBee was named Setter of the Week a couple of weeks ago.
Fernandez and the rest of the Racers will look to stay undefeated in conference play when they make their home debut this weekend. MSU will host UT Martin on Friday before battling Southeast Missouri on Saturday. First serve for both matches is set for 6 p.m. at Racer Arena.
