Home Stand Continues - Racers Host Eastern Illinois
The Murray State Racers (15-5, 8-0 OVC) enter week No. 5 of the nine-week race that is the 2020 Ohio Valley Conference season when they host the Eastern Illinois Panthers (11-9, 4-4) Thursday in a 7 p.m. tip at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky. The EIU game represents the halfway point in the OVC race as MSU tries for their third-straight league title.
The Racers have safely navigated eight games in league play to this point with an average margin of victory of 11.6 points per game, which is tops in the conference. The Racers are 4-0 at home and 4-0 on the road. They have a pair of 22-point wins over SEMO and UT Martin and an overtime win at SEMO and a four-point win at Jacksonville State.
Racers vs Panthers Series
The Racers lead the all-time series with EIU 48-11 since their first meeting in 1981. The first game against the Panthers as an OVC member came in 1997. Since then, the Racers have won 7-of-48. MSU has won the last four games since a home loss in 2017 and MSU has won 12-of-15 since 2013. The second game of this season series will happen in Charleston, Ill. on Feb. 20.

Winning Produces Impressive Streaks
When a team has a the kind of back-to-back seasons the Racers are having, you can imagine, Â the winning streaks are numerous. As the week begins, the Racers have won their last 19 games against OVC teams which includes the OVC Tournament title the Racers won in March. With that comes 17-straight OVC regular-season wins for the Racers. At home, the Racers have won their last 16 since a loss to Belmont in 2019. Included in that, is 10-straight OVC home wins. And currently, the Racers haven't lost since their overtime thriller at Evansville (Dec. 21). MSU will try to improve their nine-game win streak this week at home.
Racers' Best Rankings
MSU is 11th in NCAA D-I in field goal percentage (.487) and 25th in made free throws (331). MSU is limiting opponents to one shot most of the time as they rank 24th in defensive rebounding at 28.5 per game. MSU has 15 games this season in which they have limited opponents to less than 10 second chance points.
Morant's No. 12 To Be Retired Saturday
Murray State Athletics announced it will retire the No. 12 worn by recent Racer Great Ja Morant in a ceremony at halftime of MSU's game against SIUE. The honor bestowed on Morant comes after an amazing two seasons with the Racers (2017-19 and since, has positioned himself as one of the top candidates for the NBA Rookie of the Year award with the Memphis Grizzlies. He will be the 11th Racer number to be retired.
