Graduate Sprinter D'Myia Thornton making the most of the extra time on the track and in the classroom.
Looking forward to leaving her mark and leaving it all on the track in her final season as a Racer, Women's Track & Field graduate sprinter, D'Myia Thornton is ready for the 2020-21 season after the cancellation of the 2020 outdoor track season.
Prior to the shutdown, Thornton had run a lifetime PR at the 2020 OVC Indoor Championships in the 400 meter dash (55.96). That effort put her third overall in the Murray State Indoor Record Books and made her the bronze medal winner in the event.
Thornton appears two more times in the record books. She holds the fourth spot in the indoor 600 meter dash (1:36.40) and is eighth in the outdoor 400 meter dash (56.51).
Thornton thinks she can do better and produce a time better than 55 seconds.
"I want to really hone in on my starts. I want it to be the best part of my race," says Thornton.
Originally from Louisville, Ky., Thornton had the unique experience of living in Germany from the age of 9 to 16 on the Ramstein Air Base and credits her time there with getting her started in track & field.
"Most of the time we were working with military personnel. They have their own track team on the military air force base and the army base had their team. My coach in high school was an Army 400m runner so that's how I got into running the 400. He trained me and I stuck with it."
After returning to Louisville for her final two years of high school, Thornton's 4x200m relay team were underdogs heading into the Kentucky State Championships.
Thornton, current Racer teammate, Jumyia Denning, and their teammates were crowned champions after the disqualification of the first-place team.
Once she arrived at Murray State, Thornton says Racer head coach Adam Kiesler, helped her find herself and who she wanted to be.
"When I first came to Murray, I was super quiet. I didn't say more than ten words a week. But, Coach K slowly pulls it out of you. He helps you be comfortable with who you are and be proud of it."
Entering her fifth year as a Racer, Thornton has improved her PRs each year. This year, she's focusing on her short speed. Developing quick and powerful moves to help her get a step further.
Thornton is also using her graduate year to obtain the 150 total credit hours required in order to sit for the CPA exam.
"I talked to the Kentucky State Accounting Board and I met all the requirements with my undergrad. My main goal is to study for the CPA exam. I want to be an accountant," said Thornton.
After waiting nearly a full year for track season to begin again, Thornton is ready to run.
"I want to have a higher lifetime PR and do more for my track team. I want to win this year."
