It was a clean sweep for the Murray State baseball team Saturday, taking both seven-inning games of a doubleheader against Saint Peter's. After taking game one, 11-1, the Racers downed the Peacocks in game two, 10-3.
"We stayed focused on 14 innings of baseball," said head coach Dan Skirka. "It's a long day, we didn't give away at-bats, and we didn't give away innings, which is what we're trying to preach early on in the year. Good process and the results will come."
Game 1
The Racers pounded out 15 hits in the first game, getting multiple hits from six players. Bryan Chilton led the way with three RBI while Ryan Perkins hit a home run and scored two runs.
Shane Burns was solid on the mound, throwing five innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out eight.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, the Racers broke through in the second, scoring two runs on wild pitches before Jake Slunder drove in a run with a double.
In the third, the Racers added four more runs on a two-RBI singles by Skylar McPhee and Chilton before an error brought in the final run of the inning.
After the Peacocks got on the board in the fourth, Murray State got in back in the home half on a bases-loaded walk. Perkins put the Racers in double-digits with a two-run home run to right-center. A sacrifice fly by Sean Darmafall in the sixth capped the scoring for the Racers for game one.
Game 2
The Racers offense clicked once again in the second game of the day as they collected 12 hits, led by Brock Anderson, who went 3-4 with a home run. Perkins also added his second home run of the day and third of the season.
MSU jumped out to a big lead early as they scored seven runs in the first inning. The inning started with a three-run home run by Perkins before a triple by McPhee, two doubles from Bryson Bloomer and Alex Crump, and Anderson's second single of the inning drove in four more runs.
In the second, McPhee drove in his second run of the game with a single before an error brought in another run to make it 9-0 Racers.
Anderson put the Racers in double digits for the third straight game with a solo home run, his second of the season.
Sam Gardner picked up his first win of the season on the mound, throwing five scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
The Racers and Peacocks will wrap up their series tomorrow at 12 p.m. from Reagan Field.
