Future Racer Settle Named All-Purchase POY
3/30/2020 2:21:00 PM | Women's Basketball
For the second time in as many seasons, Murray State signee Charlee Settle of Calloway County HS has been named as the Paducah Sun All-Purchase Player of the Year. She is the third recent winner of the award to sign to play in the OVC with 2015 winner Maddie Waldrop playing at UT Martin, while she will join two-time winner Macey Turley this fall at Murray State.
"It's rare for someone to be a Paducah Sun All-Purchase player even once in their career," notes Sun sports editor Edward Marlowe. "Settle made it four times spanning her entire high school career with the Lady Lakers. She markedly improved in every statistical category with each successive season, and I fully expect that growth and hunger for the game to continue at Murray State."
The 6-1, forward ended her career with an astonishing 2,804 points and 1,700 rebounds. The 1,700 career rebounds will go down as the 10th best total in the history of girls' basketball in the Commonwealth, while her 2,804 points places her 42nd on the state all-time scoring list. This past season, Settle helped lead the Lakers to a 19-12 record and a trip to the First Region semifinals by averaging 20.7 points and 13.0 rebounds per game. Settle shot an unbelievable 49.6-percent from the floor during the 2019-20 season, while also shooting 75.4-percent from the free throw line on nearly 300 attempts.
"Charlee's back-to-back Player of the Year awards serve as testimony to her talent, her effort, and her consistent production over the last two seasons of her high school career, said Murray State women's basketball head coach Rechelle Turner. "Area coaches showed Charlee great respect by sending multiple defenders at her nightly; they also showed her great respect by identifying her as the First Region's top player once again. Charlee is an outstanding player and an outstanding young woman, and we are very excited to have her join the Racer family. I look forward to coaching Charlee and helping her on the journey of being the best player and person she can be."
