The Game
After a tough loss to rival Austin Peay last week, the Murray State football will attempt to right the ship Saturday against Tennessee State under the bright lights of Nissan Stadium in Nashville. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the game being broadcast locally on Froggy 103.7 FM and streamed nationally on ESPN+.
The Series At A Glance
Saturday will be the 32nd all-time meeting between the Racers and the Tigers with Murray State leading the way in the all-time series, 18-13, after winning each of the last five meetings. Murray State is 6-7 all-time against TSU in Nashville, going 4-2 at on-campus Hale Stadium and 2-5 at Nissan Stadium. Saturday will mark the Racers first visit to Nissan since 2013.
Scouting The Tigers
After a tough start to the season, four-time Hall of Famer and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George now has Tennessee State rolling midway through his first season as head coach. After starting the year at 1-3, the Tigers are now 4-3 and 2-1 in the OVC after blanking Eastern Illinois, 28-0, last week in Charleston.
Tennessee State currently averages 21.8 points on 352.4 yards per game, while their opponents average 20.4 points on 320.0 yards per game. While George made a name for himself as a running back in college and the NFL, his 2021 Tiger offense gravitates more towards the pass. TSU currently averages 221.2 yards per game passing and 131.1 yards per game rushing.
Devon Starling and quarterback Geremy Hickbottom have been the primary rushers for TSU this season. Starling currently has 606 yards on 135 carries with two touchdowns for 4.5 yards per carry and 86.5 per game, while Hickbottom has 164 on 49 carries with four touchdowns for 3.3 yards per carry and 23.4 per game.
Defensively, a foursome of Tigers has led TSU this season by combining for over one-third of the team's total tackles. James Green currently leads TSU with 46, while Jashun Bryant, Josh Green and Cory Rahman have 44, 43 and 42, respectively. Rahman and James Green also lead the team in tackles-for-loss with 4.5, while Terray Jones leads in sacks at 2.5. Rahman, Eddie Graham and Josh Green currently has a team-high two interceptions on the year, with Josh Green also posting a team-best six pass breakups.
A Win Saturday Would...
A win Saturday would put an end to a two-game losing streak by Murray State to open the Ohio Valley conference season.
Breakups Are Easy To Do
Through the first seven games of the season, Marcis Floyd has eight pass breakups on the season with all eight coming in the last four games. He needs just eight more to break D'Montre Wade's 2016 record of 15.
Closing In On 2K
With 1,664 career receiving yards, LaMartez Brooks is closing in on the 2,000-yard milestone. He needs just 336 yards over the last four games of the season to become the ninth player in MSU history to reach 2,000 receiving yards.
