Racers Blitz SEMO – McMahon Moves Into Third Place In MSU All-Time Wins
2/12/2021 8:15:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Chico Carter, Jr. scored 22 points as the Racers win for the fifth time in their last seven games
Head coach Matt McMahon moved into third place for career wins in Murray State men's basketball history as the Racers scored an 80-60 victory over the visiting southeast Missouri Redhawks at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky.
McMahon's 120 wins in six seasons at Murray State pushed him past MSU Hall of Famer Coach Ron Greene, who won 119 games for the Racers from 1978-85. McMahon's career mark of 120-60 produces a winning percentage of .668, which is also third among MSU coaches who served in six or more seasons.
The Racers moved above the break-even mark in total record (10-9) and evened their mark in the Ohio Valley Conference at 7-7. The game was moved back a day after winter storm Shirley hit the region with snow and ice on Wednesday night. The Friday win over SEMO means the Racers will play in back-to-back days as UT Martin comes to the CFSB Center in a Saturday 7:30 p.m. tip. MSU has a makeup road game at SIUE Monday at 4 p.m.
Chico Carter, Jr. scored 22 points, after he set his career-high of 23 points last Saturday at Eastern Kentucky. Carter was 9-of-13 from the field including 4-of-5 from the 3-point line. KJ Williams scored 17 points to go with seven rebounds, while Tevin Brown flirted with a triple-double on 15 points, seven rebounds and nine assists.
The Racers took their first double-digit lead with 6:32 left in the first half on a layup by Williams to make it 26-15. MSU finished the first half on a 9-2 run to lead 42-30. SEMO got as close as 10 points with 9:03 left in the game. With 5:24 left, Brown found Carter for his 18th 3-pointer in his last 29 attempts over his last five games. Carter's three put MSU ahe
ad 71-53. Justice Hill hit a 3-pointer and Brown a pair of free throws to make it a 21-point lead 76-55 with 4:23 remaining.
After SEMO scored the first basket of the game, the Racers never trailed after Carter made a 3-pointer just 2:40 into the contest. The Racers scored 36 points in the paint and 17 points on fast breaks.
Game Notes
With the win, the Racers lead the all-time series with SEMO 64-21 and are 31-10 at home. The Racers sweep the season series with the Redhawks after winning in Cape Girardeau, Mo. (Feb. 1) 77-60. MSU has won the last 13 meetings with SEMO since a loss at home in 2017.
Murray State is once again having a winning season at 10-9 as winners of five of their last seven games. This is the first time MSU was above the 500-mark since they were 4-3 on Dec. 21.
With 17 points tonight, KJ Williams has 942 career points at Murray State in 83 games.
As late as seven minutes left in the game, the Racers were shooting above 60 percent as a team. Only once this season has MSU made 60 percent or better in a single game. That came at home (Dec. 15) at home against Transylvania. On that night, the Racers were 37-of-60 (.617). Still tonight, the Racers ended hitting .585 on 31-of-53 shots. MSU's 31 made field goals is their second highest this season against NCAA D-I opponents following the 34 they made against Austin Peay (Dec. 8).
Chico Carter, Jr., is enjoying an amazing hot streak in his last three games. Against Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky and SEMO, he is averaging 19.3 points per game on 23-of-38 from the field for 60 percent and he is 10-of-16 from the 3-point line for 62 percent. He has also added six rebounds and assists.
