Racers’ Dynamic Duo - Brown and Williams Lead Racers Past Skyhawks
2/13/2021 10:43:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Tevin Brown scored a season-high 25 points and KJ Williams recorded his sixth double-double of the season in MSU’s win over UT Martin
The Murray State Racers won their third straight game Saturday in an 84-55 victory over the UT Martin Skyhawks at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The Racers (11-9) have won six of their last seven and are now 8-7 in Ohio Valley Conference play. MSU hits the road Monday at a 4 p.m. makeup game at SIUE.
Tevin Brown scored a season-high 25 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the 3-point line for his fifth career game at MSU of six or more 3-pointers. He also added six rebounds and three assists. KJ Williams once again threatened the CFSB Center record with 16 rebounds (the record is 18) to go with 15 points. Chico Carter, Jr., added 17 points, while Demond Robinson scored 10 points on 5-of-5 from the field.
The Racers' performance in the first half might be a scoresheet they want to frame not only from an offensive standpoint, but also defensive. The Racers held UTM to zero assists in the first half and their final field goal of the half came with 10:55 remaining. MSU hit 6-of-12 from the 3-point line (Five from Brown) and made 17-of-30 from the field for 57 percent.
Game Notes
This game marked the third game this season in which KJ Williams has grabbed 16 rebounds. He had six double-doubles this season and 17 in his career at MSU. The CFSB Center single-game rebound mark is 18, set by James Singleton against Eastern Illinois in 2003 and Matched in 2013 by Jarvis Williams.
Williams is closing in on becoming the 48th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club. He now has 957.
Brown now has five games at MSU with six or more made 3-point baskets. He also had six threes this season at home against Tennessee Tech (Jan. 23). He has a share of the MSU single-game record of nine from his game at UTM (01-10-19).
Demond Robinson's 5-of-5 from the field marks the Racers' second perfect shooting game of five or more made baskets this season. Williams also had a 5-of-5 game (12-21-20) at Austin Peay. The top perfect scoring game in recent times is 9-of-9 by Jarvis Williams (01-08-14) against Eastern Kentucky and Ivan Aska against Mo. St. Louis (11-14-09). The best game for a Racer since 1998 is 10-of-10 by Singleton against Tennessee State (02-27-03) and Cuthbert Victor also against TSU (01-30-01).
The SIUE game marks the final team MSU has not played yet this season from the OVC. Because of established protocols, the game is being played Monday. That means game two with the Cougars will come soon. SIUE will visit the Racers next week for game on Saturday (Feb. 20). The Racers have their last 13 meetings with SIUE since their last loss at the First Community Arena in 2014.
