The Murray State men's golf team gets the 2021 portion of the season going at the ASU Spring Kickoff (Feb. 21-22). Alabama State is the host of the 54-hole event at Capitol Hill Golf Club in Prattville, Ala. Play will be held on the Senator Course.
The event is the first of seven the Racers will play leading up to the Ohio Valley Conference Championship in April.
Murray State Golf is in its 64th season overall and Coach Eddie Hunt takes the team into his 20th season at helm of the program. During Hunt's previous 19 seasons, the Racers have won 35 team events and produced 31 individual winners.
"This has been an incredibly tough time for all student-athletes and of course, my players as well," said Hunt whose team lost their spring and fall seasons in 2020 because of the pandemic. "But I've been very proud of our guys and how they've stayed committed. The game of golf helped them get through this. They just tried to keep playing to be as ready as they can be for when we did get to play a tournament again. So here we are, we get to play and everyone is happy about that."
Even though the team has battled a week-plus period of winter weather, which has kept them off the course, the Racers are ready to open the season in Alabama State's spring event. The Racers are ready to send out a starting lineup that features seniors, Connor Coombs, Avery Edwards, Quinn Eaton and Austin Knight, plus sophomore Walker Beck. Tyler Powell, a freshman, will play the event as an individual.
In this Covid era, the ASU Spring Classic is playing teams together to add an extra layer of security. The Racers will play three players in two groups. Coach Hunt reports the first four events the Racers play in this spring will do this style of play in which teams stick together and don't mix with players from other teams.
After this weekend in Prattville, the Racers continue by playing four March events including the Gulf Coast Collegiate (March 1-2) in Diamondhead, Miss., the Benbow Collegiate (March 8-10) in Jacksonville, Fla., the Bobby Nichols Collegiate (March 14-16) in Sevierville, Tenn., and the National Intercollegiate (March 29-30) in Greensboro, Ga.
The Racers host their home event, the Murray State Invitational (April 5-6) at Miller Memorial Golf Course, before traveling to Nashville, Tenn. (April 12-13) for the Big Blue Intercollegiate.
The OVC Championship is once again at The Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Ala. (April 25-28) at the Fighting Joe course. It marks the seventh-straight and eighth overall time the event has been held on the course.
