MSU Women’s Golf Opens Spring Season At Georgia Southern Event

The Murray State women's golf team gets the 2021 portion of the season going at the Strutter Gus Invitational (Feb. 21-22) in Statesboro, Ga. The 54-hole event hosted by Georgia Southern will be contested at the GSU Golf Course.
The event marks a return to action after the Racers had their 2020 spring season shortened and fall season cancelled because of the pandemic. MSU's spring season leads up to the Ohio Valley Conference Championship in April where the Racers will be trying for their fourth consecutive title.
Murray State women's program is in its 28th season overall, with the founder of the program, Coach Velvet Milkman guiding the way as the only coach the Racers have ever had. She started the Murray State program in the 1993-94 school year and has coached championship-level student-athletes that have produced 12 OVC championships, the most of any coach at Murray State.
"Our team has experienced the same challenges as any team in any sport," said Milkman. "The pandemic knocked us out of action for almost a year. However, I couldn't be more proud of our student-athletes, both our returners and newcomers, at the way they have stayed true to do their best and to work hard. We are all very excited to return to competition and to see what kind of spring we can have."
A couple of winter storms have kept the Racers off the practice tee and course in the last week. However, they are ready to play with a starting lineup that features Raeshya Surendran who was named All-OVC after the 2020 spring season was left incomplete. The senior Surendran, has been an important part of the three-straight OVC titles the Racers have earned. All-OVC Newcomer Team selection, Ana Garvia Picchi, a sophomore, is also in the starting lineup. The rest of MSU's starting five has returners Sarah Forsythe (junior) and Payton Carter (Soph.) and freshman Briana McMinn. The Racers will also have three individuals competing including Charli Jo Doss, Emmie Eriksson and Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria.
The Racers continue their spring season (Feb. 28-March 2) at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate in South Carolina and the North Florida Collegiate (March 8-9) in Jacksonville. The Bama Beach Bash (March 19-21) happens in Mobile, Alabama, while the Racers visit the Chattanooga Invitational (March 29-30). The Racers host their home event, the Jan Weaver Invitational, at Miller Memorial (April 9-10).
The OVC Championship returns to Hampton Cove in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama (April 18-20). The 54-hole championship will be played on the Highlands course.
