Racers Save Best For Last In Season Opener

MSU fires a 311 in the final round of the Strutter Gus Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
The Murray State women's golf team carded a final round 311, which was 18 shots better than their first round, at the Strutter Gus Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.

The season opener for the spring season, the Racers placed 10th on scores of 329-327-311 to finish at 960.

Payton Carter led the Racers with a 19th place finish on rounds of 80-80-75=235. Her round of 75 was the best for the Racers in the 54-hole event and she made seven birdies, which was tied for third in the field of 68 players. Other Murray State scores and finishes included Raeysha Surendran in 42nd place on rounds of 81 82 81=244. Sara Forsythe and Briana McMinn shared 47th place. Forsythe posted scores of 87-83-76=246, while McMinn carded scores of 82-84-80=246. Ana Picchi placed 52nd on scores of 86-82-80=248. MSU's three solo players were led by Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria with a 47th place showing on scores of 84-78-84=246. Emmie Eriksson  had scores of 91-90-87=258 and placed 66th and Charli Doss was 67th on rounds of 92-82-87=261.
Seminole State was the team winner at 920.

Next up for the Racers is the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate in South Carolina (Feb. 28-March 2).

About Murray State Women's Golf
The Racers' program is in its 28th season overall, with the founder of the program, Coach Velvet Milkman guiding the way as the only coach the Racers have ever had. She started the Murray State program in the 1993-94 school year and has coached championship-level student-athletes that have produced 12 OVC championships, the most of any coach at Murray State. Also serving for many years as the Murray State Senior Woman Administrator, Milkman did MSU Athletics a great service by serving as Interim Athletics Director from July 2018 through February 2019. Milkman is involved at the NCAA level shaping women's golf on a national scale. She served a four-year term (2009-12) on the NCAA Women's Golf Committee including two years as chair.

Located in Murray, Kentucky, the athletics department at Murray State University is a member of NCAA D-I and plays in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Racers have 15 programs including men's teams for baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf and women's teams for basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field and volleyball. MSU also has a rifle program that is coed. The Racers are one of the founding members of the Ohio Valley Conference from its beginnings in 1948.
