Racers Sweep Tennessee State in Home Opener

The Racers beat the Lady Tigers in straight sets , 25-17, 25-11, and 25-21
The Murray State volleyball team opened the 2020-21 season, Sunday afternoon, taking on Tennessee State at Racer Arena, cruising to a three-set victory.

The Racers improved to 1-0 overall and in the OVC while the Tigers fall to 0-1 overall and in the OVC.

Jayla Holcombe led the Racers with 14 kills. Becca Fernandez had 18 digs for MSU while Callie Anderton tallied 37 assists.
"For our first match of the season, I am very proud of how my team played. I think they did a lot of what we practice in the gym everyday which is what we are always trying to strive for," said Head Coach Dave Schwepker.Â

The Racers got off to a fast start in the first set, jumping out to a 8-3 lead, but the Lady Tigers responded with an four of the next five points to close the gap to 9-7. The Racers then went on a 10-5 run to force Tennessee State to call a timeout at 19-12 which was wide enough cushion for the Racers as they took the set 25-17.

Murray State got off to another fast start in the second set, winning the first four points, with kills from Taylor Beasley and Kolby McClelland. Fernandez served nine in a row to bring the Racers lead to 13-2. MSU continued to dominate Tennessee State going on a 9-4 run and ended the set 25-11 with a kill from McClelland.

The third set went back and forth with the score tied at 12 until Murray State took a 4-0 run thanks to a kill from Darci Metzger and a service ace from Jayla Holcombe. The Racers were able to hold on as they won the set, 25-21, to take the match, finishing with back-to-back kills from Holcombe.

The Racers face the Lady Tigers again tomorrow at Racer Arena at 4 p.m. to wrap up their series. Â
