Racers defeated Memphis, 9-5 in series opener
The Murray State Baseball team (11-10, 4-2) opened their three-game series against the Memphis Tigers (9-11, 0-0) with a 9-5 win at FedEx Park in Memphis, Tennessee.
Jake Slunder was a perfect 4-for-4, tying his career high with four hits. He also walked and scored three runs in the game.
Ryan Perkins deliver a game-high three RBIs including a first inning two-run home run.
Â
It was a balance attack as seven different Racers tallied hits and six scored runs.
The Racers jumped on the board early as Slunder led off the game with an infield single and Perkins blasted his second home run of the season over the right field wall.
Memphis evened the game at two in the third on Hunter Goodman's two RBI single and then took a lead in the fourth with a lead off solo homer by Taylor Howell and sac fly from Braden Webb.
Murray State had breakout fifth inning posting five runs on four hits. With runners on second and third, Perkins struck out swinging but reached on a wild pitch to load the bases. Brock Anderson walked to drive in his 21st run of the season.
Â
Next batter, Bryson Bloomer drove a rocket back up the middle to drive in two and give the Racers a 5-4 lead. A Tiger pitching change did nothing to slow down the Racers as Trey Woosley doubled off the base of the wall in center to put Murray State up 7-4.
Â
Memphis got one run back in the bottom half of the inning as Taylor Howell hit his second home run of the game.
Â
The Racers added two runs in the sixth with Perkins collecting his third RBI and Cozart drove in his team-leading 23rd RBI of the season.
Â
Shane Burns made his sixth start of the season, going 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out two.
Â
Jacob Pennington came in in relief and earned his second win, throwing 4.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Â
Alec Whaley closed out the final 1.1 innings, allowing no runs on two hits and struck out two.
