Racers Split Doubleheader, Earn Third-Straight Series Victory

Murray State splits doubleheader with Memphis
After weather postponed yesterday's game, the Murray State Baseball team (12-11, 4-2) faced off against the Memphis Tigers (10-12, 0-0) in a doubleheader on Sunday, dropping game one 6-1 before winning the rubber match, 4-2 at FedEx Park in Memphis, Tennessee.

Freshman Drew Vogel made his collegiate debut, starting at shortstop in game two of the doubleheader. Vogel was hit by a pitch and scored a run.

Game One – Murray State 1, Memphis 6
Jordan Cozart hit a solo shot to left to give the Racers an early 1-0 lead for his seventh home run of the year and his team-leading 24th RBI.

Memphis matched with a solo homer of their own to tie the game at one in the second.
Â
The Tigers broke the deadlock the fifth with a two-RBI single and added three more in the sixth to win 6-1 and even the series at one apiece

The Racers had base runners in every inning except one but Memphis was able to contain any threats including in the seventh when MSU had two on with one out.

Game Two – Murray State 4, Memphis 2
For the second game in a row, Jordan Cozart hit a first inning home run to put Murray State up. With the solo shot, Cozart is tied for sixth with nation with eight long balls and tied Brock Anderson for the team lead.

Memphis took advantage of back-to-back errors by Bryson Bloomer to take score two unearned runs and lead 2-1 in the second.

With the bases loaded in the fourth, Jake Slunder reached on an error by the third baseman. Both Bloomer and Jacob Pennington scored on the play as the Racers retook a 3-2 lead. Ryan Perkins was then hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Cozart drew a four-pitch walk to give the Racers an insurance run and make it 4-2.

Jake Jones made his first start of the season to earn his fourth win. Jones threw 4.0 innings and only allowing one hit while striking out five.

Cade Vernon threw the final three innings to pick up the first save of career.
Murray State will travel to Tennessee Tech for a single game Thursday (Apr. 1) and a doubleheader Friday (Apr. 2). First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
