Murray State drop the series opener to the Governors 7-3
The Murray State Baseball team (29-22, 17-11 OVC) fell 7-3 to the Austin Peay Governors (21-30, 15-13 OVC) in the series opener Thursday night at Johnny Reagan Field.
With a regular season title on the Racers came out firing, but were not able to figure out Austin Peay's starter Luke Brown after the first inning. Brown threw eight complete innings on 112 pitches and allowed only two hits after giving up four in the first.
Murray State's hopes of winning the title are still alive after tonight but they will now need some help from UT Martin. The Racers will need to sweep the doubleheader and need UTM to split with SEMO as the Redhawks won 6-2 over the Skyhawks tonight in Cape Girardeau.
Austin Peay opened the scoring in the first, capitalizing on a leadoff single that came around to give the Govs a 1-0 lead.
The Racers answered with three of their own in the bottom half, all coming with two outs. Brock Anderson lined a double to left center and Jordan Cozart followed with a walk. Three straight RBI singles then came from Ryan Perkins, Alex Crump and Brennan McCullough gave the Racers a 3-1 lead after the first.
A solo home run off the bat of Austin Peay's TJ Foreman made it 3-2 in the second and Foreman then tied the game at three in the fourth with his second RBI of the day.
Austin Peay broke the tie in the sixth inning posting four runs on four hits.
In the sixth, Cozart ended Austin Peay's starter Brown streak of retiring fourteen straight Racer batters with first-pitch single through the left side. Crump also added his second hit of the day.
The Racers worked out of a no-out bases loaded situation in the top of the seventh to keep it a 7-3 game. Alec Whaley came on to pitch for Jacob Pennington with Govs occupying every base and used two force outs at the plate including a 9-2 force out, and a strikeout looking to get out without allowing a run.
Shane Burns (1-2) was tagged with his second loss of the season, allowing five runs on five hits. Jacob Pennington allowed two runs on six hits and fanned two in his lone inning of work. Alec Whaley shut down the Govs offense, throwing three shutout innings and struck out four.
The Racers wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader against the Governors tomorrow, May 21. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
