Racers Take Third Place In Season Opener At Payne Stewart Memorial

The Racers moved up three spots in the final round at Twin Hills Country Club in Springfield, Mo.
The Murray State women's golf team moved up three spots to a share of third place after the final round of the Payne Stewart Memorial at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, Missouri.

In the opener to the 2021-22 season, the Racers posted rounds of 299-305-299=903 as they shared third place with Drake. Host Missouri State (904), Texas A&M Corpus Christi (904), Oklahoma City (906), Wichita State (908), Bradley (908) and Austin Peay (909) made up the top-10. Oral Roberts was the team winner at 874 and California Baptist was the runner up at 882.

Alma Garcia and Ana Picchi gave the Racers two players in the top-15. Garcia posted a score line of 72-74-74=220 which produced an 11th place showing. Picchi's scores of 75-76-73=224 was good for a spot in 15th place. Other MSU scores and finishes included Payton Carter in 46th place on scores of 76-78-79=233 and Eliza Kho in 48th place on scores of 81-77-76=234. Sarah Forsythe had rounds of 76-87-76=239 and placed 65th. Lauren Gilchrist competed as one of five solo players in the field and placed 70th on rounds of 81-83-79=243.

Missouri State's Abby Cavaiani was the medalist on scores of 69-69-73=211 with a two-shot win over Kiana Oshiro of Oral Roberts (73-68-72=213).

The Twin Hills course played to a par-71 and to a length of 6,026 yards.

The Payne Stewart Memorial is named in honor of the Springfield, Mo. native and PGA Tour standout who perished in a plane crash in 1999 at age 42. Stewart won 11 PGA Tour events including three major championships: the PGA Championship in 1989 and a pair of US Open titles in 1991 and 1999.

Murray State's next challenge is the Austin Peay Intercollegiate (Sept. 27-28) at Legacy Golf Club in Springfield, Tennessee.
