Racers Tangle With TTU In CookevilleÂ
Murray State's second-straight week with two games against the same opponent finds the Racers (18-2) looking for success against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. Tip time Thursday is set for 6 p.m. at the Eblen Center in Cookeville where the Racers will try to keep their winning ways going after starting the league season 8-0.
Game One Notes
The Racers turned in one of their best defensive performances of the season in Monday's 79-53 victory over TTU. MSU held TTU to only three free throw attempts and only two 3-point baskets in 24 tries. KJ Williams posted his second consecutive double-double on 21 points and 11 rebounds (his seventh of the season) to lead the Racers. The Racers enjoyed a 39-24 lead at the halftime intermission and were never threatened in the second half by outscoring Tech 40-29. The Racers will look to duplicate the defensive effort on Tech's home court where they are 4-2 this season. MSU is 5-1 away from home in 2021-22.
Racers Move Up In Rankings
For the first time this season, the Racers received votes when the Associated Press Men's Basketball Top-25 Poll was released Monday. The Racers received 10 votes and were 34th nationally. Additionally, the Racers were No. 33 in the NCAA Net Rankings, No. 48 in the Ken Pomeroy Rankings and No. 5 in the CollegeInsider.com Poll. Playing a competitive schedule, the Racers tangled with No. 1 Auburn (Dec. 22) and battled to a 71-58 defeat and have quality wins this season over Belmont, Chattanooga, James Madison, Memphis and Middle Tennessee. If Murray State can break into the AP Top-25, it will be their first since March 2015 when the team had an OVC record 25-game winning streak, led by MSU Hall of Famer and current member of the NBA's Phoenix Suns.
Impressive Careers Getting Better For Brown & Williams
Tevin Brown and KJ Williams are going places in MSU's record book that few players have gone before. Brown is one of only three MSU players to score 1,000 points, grab 500 rebounds and give out 350 assists. Williams is on the verge of being the seventh Racer to score 1,000 points and grab 800 rebounds.Â
Brown Eyes OVC 3-Point Record
Tevin Brown has already set the new record for made 3-point baskets in MSU history (Jan. 17) at Eastern Illinois as he surpassed MSU Hall of Famer Isaiah Canaan who starred for the Racers from 2009-13 with 304. Entering the Thursday game at TTU, Brown has 314. Â He needs only needs six 3-pointers to break the OVC record of 319 currently held by Austin Peay's Joe Sibbitt (1994-98).
