Tevin Brown Becomes OVC 3-Point King
1/31/2022 10:22:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The Murray State star broke the OVC 3-point record that had stood for 24 years
The NCAA instituted the 3-point shot in time to be used in the 1986-87 season and it forever changed the game. In 2022, Murray State's Tevin Brown put his name in the Ohio Valley Conference record book as the top 3-point shooter in the 36 years since the shot became part of the game.
As the Racers hosted the Morehead State Eagles (Jan. 29) at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky, Brown needed three 3-point baskets to break the OVC career record. With 4:14 remaining in the first half, his 3-pointer from the wing gave him 320 as he surpassed Joe Sibbitt's mark of 319 set at Austin Peay from 1994-98.
The fourth-year player from Fairhope, Alabama was relieved to finally capture the coveted record.
"It feels good, but I'm not going to lie, I am glad all of that is over with!" Brown said with a laugh. "Now we can focus on us winning basketball games. There was just a lot of attention on it (the record) and I'm not a person who likes a lot of attention. There was a lot of that this week knowing how many I needed to tie the record and break it."
"I am thrilled Tevin had tons of family and friends here to see it in front of that great crowd and atmosphere," said Racer head coach Matt McMahon. "About four decades ago (when the 3-point shot started) and all of the good players who have gone through this league, nobody has made more threes than Tevin Brown. Great credit to him, not only his work ethic, as you see a 6-5 guy who has an effortless release, his basketball IQ and all those things, but he has sustained excellence for four years. He's been a terrific player and does so many other things, but that is a special record, being the 3-point king in the OVC."
Brown's amazing career already has him as one of only three Murray State players with 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 350 assists. The others are Glen Green (1979-83) and Isaac Spencer (1997-01). This accomplishment alone shows that Tevin Brown is much more than a 3-point shooter, but it's the long jumper that caught the attention of everyone in his first season of 2018-19. Brown hit 90 threes that season and added 85 in his second season. As a third-year player in 2020-21, Brown hit 73 and is just one behind that mark after 22-games of the 2021-22 season.
As of his record-breaking night, Brown is 11th in Murray State history with 1,798 points and 19th in made field goals. From the 3-point line, he is 21st in percentage at .390, which is impressive in that he is also the MSU all-time leader in attempted threes at 820. He ranks ninth in career steals (140), eighth in career assists (381) and 17th in career blocked shots (61).
In Murray State history, the top-5 all-time players in made 3-point shots include: Brown at 320, Isaiah Canaan (2009-13) at 304, Frank Allen (1989-93) at 251, Jonathan Stark (2016-18) and Jeffery Moss (2012-16) each at 218.
When it comes to individual games, Brown has hit five 3-pointers in a game 18 times and the Racers have won 16 of them. He owns a share of the Murray State single-game mark of nine made 3-pointers. He accomplished that feat at UT Martin on Jan. 10, 2019. He shares the record with Justin Burdine who did it at home vs Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 21, 2002 and Stark who did it at South Dakota State on Dec. 17, 2016.
The Racers are having another outstanding season at 20-2 and have their 32nd season of 20 wins in the 97 seasons of the program. They put their 10-0 OVC mark on the line Thursday at Austin Peay.
