Murray State fell 1-0 to Southern Illinois on a Salukis penalty kick in the 84th minute

Murray State dropped a closely contested 1-0 match to Southern Illinois on Thursday evening in Carbondale, Illinois. The loss snaps the Racers five-game unbeaten streak in Missouri Valley Conference play.

MSU looked to be the stronger side throughout much of the contest with a 13-5 advantage in the shot count. The Racers had several big chances in the first half as a Lauren Payne header drew a huge save from the SIU keeper.

The Racers had three shots on target in the match with two coming from Payne and Audrey Henry having one.

The lone goal of the match came in the 84^th minute when the Salukis were awarded a penalty. SIU was able to convert from the spot to earn the lead that would hold through full-time.

Hailey Cole impressed in her first match in two weeks with several key runs in an attacking midfield role while putting up four shots.

Murray State will change their focus to Valparaiso as MSU hosts the Beacons for the last home match of the season. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff time and will be streamed on ESPN+.
