Murray State women’s soccer took the 2-1 victory over the first-place bears behind a stellar night from Saraya Young
Senior forward Saraya Young netted a goal and dished out an assist in Murray State's 2-1 win over Missouri State on Thursday night in Springfield, Mo. The Bears entered the matchup undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference games and first place on the league table.
The Racers got the scoring started early as Young pressured and took away a pass from the Missouri State center back and challenged two Bears' defenders before tucking a shot inside the near post to give the Racers the lead in the 16th minute of the match.
Just two minutes later Murray State extended their lead. On a perfectly placed diagonal pass from Megan Wilson, Young again drove the ball up the field before delivering a magnificent low cross to Lauren Payne who powered it past the goalkeeper. The goal marks the second consecutive link-up for the seniors as Young and Payne combined for the Racers goal against UIC on Sunday.
Young now has a goal and four assists on the year while Payne leads the Racers with three goals.
Missouri State's defense had proven to be a fortress of sorts, allowing just one goal in their previous six matches before Murray State put two in the net on Thursday. The Bears had allowed just one goal in MVC games coming into the match.
Goalkeeper Jenna Villacres impressed for the Racers, facing nine shots on goal while making eight saves for Murray State. Villacres now has 44 saves on the season.
The Racers and Bears were very evenly matched on their shot attempts with Missouri State outshooting Murray State 11-9.
Freshman Tori Schrimpf continues to build on her solid performances with two shots on goal to lead the team on the night as four different Racers put a shot on goal in the contest.
Murray State moves to 2-1-2 in MVC play and currently are tied for fourth place in the league standings.
The Racers host Illinois State on Sunday at 1 p.m. with coverage of the contest on ESPN3.
