The Game
The Murray State women's basketball team will look to get 2023 started right Sunday when it welcomes Valparaiso to the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky for a New Year's Day matinee that tips at 2 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Racers enter Sunday's tilt at 1-0 in the MVC after a 68-55 win over UIC Friday at the CFSB Center. Katelyn Young led all scorers with 21 points in the game, while Hannah McKay posted a double-double of 17 points and a season-high 12 rebounds.
Series At A Glance
Sunday will be the first-ever meeting between the Racers and the Beacons.
Scouting The Beacons
After falling at Belmont, 74-60, Friday in its MVC opener, Valparaiso enters Sunday at 2-7 overall, having lost each of its last seven contests.
Leah Earnest currently leads the scoring for Valpo with 12.2 points per game, while Olivia Brown and Ali Saunders are virtually even with Earnest at 12.1 and 12.0, respectively. Earnest also leads Valpo on the boards at 8.8 rebounds per game, while Ella Van Weelden follows at 3.8
Valpo currently averages 65.3 points per game on 43.3-percent shooting with 32.4 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, the Beacons' opponents are averaging 75.9 points per game on 41.5-percent shooting with 38.4 rebounds per game.
A Win Would...
A win Sunday would put the Racers two wins away from a pair of historic milestones. A victory over Valparaiso would give MSU 649 all-time program wins and 199 all-time wins at the CFSB Center.
Hoopin' In The New Year
Sunday will mark the sixth time in its history that Murray State has played on New Year's Day. Currently, the Racers are 2-3 in those contests. The contests are usually close for MSU on New Year's Day with four of the five games being decided by one possession.
