If the first clash between the Murray State Racers (22-2, 12-0) and Morehead State Eagles (19-7, 11-2) is any indication, the second meeting will also be a classic. The Racers and Eagles meet Saturday at Johnson Arena in Morehead, Kentucky in a 3 p.m. CT tip as the first place team in the Ohio Valley Conference meets second place team. The Racers won the first meeting in Murray (Jan. 29) 77-66 in a game that was tied 10 times and wasn't decided until the Racers broke free at the end of the game with an 8-0 run. The Racers won their sixth-straight road game Thursday with a 73-62 win at Tennessee State while KJ Williams scored a career-high 39 points.Â
Racers Break Into AP Top-25
The Racers' game at TSU was their 40th all-time game as a ranked team and the first as a head coach for Matt McMahon. It was MSU's first ranked game since the 2015 OVC Tournament championship game against Belmont and their first win since beating Morehead State the same year in the semifinals.Â
The Racers debuted No. 23 in the Associated Press Top-25 and No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. MSU moved up to No. 2 behind only Gonzaga in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 and they were No. 27 by KenPom.com and No. 29 in the NCAA Net Rankings.
For the moment, the Racers have the most wins of any team in the nation with 23. Auburn and South Dakota State each have 22 wins. With the win, the Racers are part of a group of six teams that are undefeated in their conference. The others are: Vermont (America East), Longwood (Big South), Wagner (Northeast), South Dakota State (Summit) and Gonzaga (West Coast).
One of Many Top Performances
KJ Williams' 39 points against TSU topped his former career-high of 33 points had about a month ago against UT Martin. It was an amazing second half in which Williams scored 31 against the Tigers. It was MSU's highest scoring game since Ja Morant who scored 40 at SIUE in 2019. It's the third time in MSU history that someone has scored 39 points. The other two are Marcus Brown at home against Middle Tennessee in 1996 and Frank Allen who scored 39 at home against Tennessee Tech in 1992. Â Brown, still has the MSU single-game record since he scored 45 points at home against Washington University in 1995.
