At 5-0, MSU is off to program’s best OVC start
The Murray State softball team continued its winning ways Saturday by taking both games of a doubleheader with UT Martin, 5-1 and 4-2, at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky. The wins give the Racers 11 consecutive wins and their best OVC start in program history at 5-0.
Game 1 – Murray St. 5, UT Martin 1
In game one, the Racers bookended the scoring with home runs, beginning with a solo shot from Lindsey Carroll in the second and ending with a two-run blast from Gracie Osbron in the sixth. In between, Murray State picked up an RBI single from Jensen Striegel and an RBI sac fly from Logan Braundmeier in the fifth to cap the scoring at five.
In the circle, it was another impressive day for the Blue & Gold, as Hannah James (9-3) pitched a complete game in which she allowed no earned runs on just three hits with an impressive 12 strikeouts and only one walk.
Game 2 – Murray St. 4, UT Martin 2
In the second game, it was the Skyhawks that were first on the board thanks to an RBI single from Kallie Pickens in the opening stanza. However, the Racer answered in the second after Chloe Jacque got on board with a single and found her way around the bases, eventually scoring on a fielder's choice from Osbron.
The Racers then took the lead in the third on an RBI double from Sierra Gilmore and then added to the lead in the fifth on another RBI double from Gilmore. In the top of the sixth, Pickens struck again for UT Martin and cut the lead to 3-2 after ending her 10-pitch at bat with a solo homerun. However, in the bottom of the frame, Lily Fischer sealed the win for Murray State with a home run of her own, her third of the season.
Gilmore finished the game at 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk, while Jacque and Fischer were each 2-for-3. In the circle, Jenna Veber moved to 9-4 on the season by just one run on four hits with six strikeouts over the final five innings of the game. Kamryn Carcich began the game for Murray State and allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts in the first two innings.
On Sunday, the Racers return to Racer Field looking for their second consecutive series sweep when they host UT Martin in the third and final game of the weekend at 1 p.m., airing live on ESPN+.
