Championship Memories Run Deep For Murray State At OVC Tournament

The Murray State Racers look to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament Saturday night in Evansville
The Murray State Racers will appear in their 31st Ohio Valley Conference Tournament final in the 59th playing of the event, when the top-seeded Racers (29-2) meet the third seeded Morehead State Eagles at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana on Saturday. The 7:30 p.m. game will air live to a national television audience on ESPN2.
Â
The Racers are 17-13 in OVC title games with recent wins in 2010, 2012, 2018 and 2019. Not only have the Racers won more than any team in the history of the event with 17 championships, they've also had their share of runner up finishes which they have had to endure 13 times. The Bottom line is, the Racers are nearly always in the hunt for the OVC Tournament title and they've won more than they have lost.
Â
The Racers and Eagles have met 14 times in the OVC Tournament where Murray State has a lead of 12-2 with the Eagles taking wins in 1984 and 2016. Murray State met Morehead State one time for the title, in 2010 when the Racers prevailed 62-51 in Nashville, Tenn.
Â
With a win, Murray State Coach Matt McMahon joins Steve Newton as the only Racer coaches to take the team to three NCAA tournaments. Newton led the Racers to the NCAAs in 1988, 1990 and 1991.
