In A Nutshell
The Murray State softball team will host Morehead State Saturday and Sunday at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky. Saturday's single game will begin at 4 p.m. and will serve as Senior Day for the Racers. On Sunday, Murray State will close out its 2022 regular-season with a doubleheader against the Eagles, beginning at 1 p.m.
All-Time Series At A Glance
The Racers hold a 17-7 lead in the all-time series against Morehead State and a 11-3 advantage in games played in Murray. Heading into the weekend, Murray State has won each of the last five meetings between the two teams both overall and at Racer Field.
Scouting The Eagles
The Eagles are 7-34 overall this season and 6-18 in OVC play. Tennessee State took two out of three games from Morehead State last weekend in Morehead, Kentucky, with the Eagles winning the opener, 3-1.
Offensively, Morehead State is currently batting .220 on the season, while their opponents are hitting .335. In the circle, the Eagles have a staff ERA of 5.77, while their opponents have limited them to an ERA of 2.15. In addition, Eagles pitchers dole out 4.2 strikeouts per seven innings and have a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 0.9:1.
Individually, Lennon Spicer leads the way for the Eagles in the circle with an ERA of 4.56, a 5-17 record, a shutout, 89 strikeouts and 46 walks. At the plate, Madeline Gailor leads Morehead State with team-highs in batting average at .280 and RBIs at 18.
A Series Sweep Would...
There are very few scenarios that require anything less than a three-game sweep by the Racers in order to claim the first OVC regular-championship in program history. Murray State needs Belmont to lose at least one game in its series with Southeast Missouri for the Racers to be able to claim at least a share of the title.
One game back from the Bruins, the Racers best chance for to win the championship are to sweep Morehead State and have the Bruins drop one to SEMO. In this scenario both teams would finish the season at 22-6 and would both receive a share of the championship, however Murray State would get the top-seed in next week's OVC tournament due to the Racers holding the head-to-head advantage.
Goodbye Old Friends
On Saturday, the Racers will say goodbye to five seniors who have made a significant impact during their time in blue and gold. Logan Brandmeier, Sierra Gilmore, Chloe Jacque, Emma Olejniczak and Jensen Striegel will all be honored before the series opener against Morehead State.
