Racers men's cross country finished third at first 8K race of the season
Murray State men's cross country placed third with 84 points at Tennessee Tech, Friday.
Vicente Corrreia finished fourth overall with a time of 26 minutes 9.60 seconds. He led the pack in the 2-mile mark (10:17.10) before finishing the race fourth.
Close behind Correia was Jorge Ruiz who placed sixth overall with a time of 26 minutes 22.7 seconds. Him and Correia stayed within the top-10 throughout the race.
"As Vicentebegan to waiver, Jorge was there to push the pace and challenge Vicente until the last kilometer when Vicente pulled away again," said Jordan Johnston, cross country coach.
Joey Santoro placed 21st overall with a time of 27 minutes and 29.40 seconds, finishing third for the Racers in his first 8K race.
"I think that his high school training prepared him very well for the transition into college," Johnston said.
Daniel Schalk placed 27th overall to finish fourth for the Racers with a time of 27 minutes and 54.40 seconds. Johnston said he showed big mental improvement and was constantly making moves to pass people throughout the race.
Benjamin Hall round up the Racers' top-five at 29th with a time of 27 minutes and 58.50 seconds.
Closely following Hall was Jarod Willis who ran 59 seconds faster than last year's Golden Eagle Invite to finish 31st with a time of 28 minutes and 15.6 seconds.
The Racers competed in this meet last year but it was four weeks into the season.
"To have them come back and run faster on the same course is a big step forward," Johnston said.
The Racers will travel to Missouri for the Gans Creek Classic, Sept. 30.
