Racers Make First Trip Drake & UNI
The Murray State Racers (9-6, 4-1 MVC) hit the road for their first visit to the Hawkeye State to face the Drake Bulldogs (11-5, 2-3 MVC) when they tip Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Knapp Center in Des Moines. The game marks the Racers' first trip to play Drake and then UNI on Tuesday as the Racers play in their first season in the Missouri Valley Conference.Â
Last Time Out
The Racers ran past the Bradley Braves Wednesday at home 67-58 behind the third double-double this season by DJ Burns on 16 points and 10 rebounds as eight different Racers scored. The Racers' defensive effort on Bradley's All-MVC forward Rienk Mast was extraordinary in limiting him to three points and one rebound. Leading the MVC in free throw attempts at 20 per game, the Racers got to the line 24 times against the Braves and made 20.
Racers & Bulldogs Series
Murray State and Drake have met three times in their series and all have come at neutral sites with two recently being played in Nashville (2014) and Estero, Florida (2019). Their first meeting was in 1938 at the NAIB National Tournament in Kansas City. Drake won the game in 2019 and the Racers won the first two.
Cameron Payne's Jersey To Be Retired
Murray State 2020 Hall of Fame member, Cameron Payne will have his jersey retired (Jan. 14) when the Racers host the UIC Flames at 3 p.m.. Payne arrived at MSU from Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis in fall of 2013 and in 69 games in two seasons wearing No. 1, he became a lottery pick in the 2015 NBA Draft .The Oklahoma City Thunder selected Payne in the first round as the 14th overall pick. After playing for the Thunder, Bulls, Raptors and Cavaliers, Payne found a home in 2020 with the Phoenix Suns and is with the team for a 4th year.
