The Racers are set to compete in five regular-season indoor events and nine regular-season outdoor events.
Murray State track and field head coach Adam Kiesler announced the 2023-24 indoor and outdoor schedule on Tuesday.
The Racers are slated to compete in five indoor meets prior to postseason Missouri Valley Conference competition. The MVC stages its indoor championships meet (Feb.25-26) in Chicago. MSU competes in nine meets for the outdoor portion of its schedule before the MVC hosts its championships meet (May 10-12) in Terre Haute, Indiana.
"Our schedule looks very familiar to those in the past because it allows us to compete against some of the best competition in the country," said Kiesler, who saw his team place second in the MVC indoor and outdoor championships last season. "We believe heading to Vanderbilt and up to Louisville will allow us to achieve all of our team and individual goals." Â
Murray State opens the indoor season in Carbondale, Illinois at the Saluki Fast Start on December 2nd hosted by Southern Illinois. The Racers get the 2024 calendar year started in Nashville, Tennessee at the Commodore Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt (Jan. 12-13).
MSU returns to Nashville a week after for the Vanderbilt Invitational (Jan. 19-20) before traveling to Louisville, Kentucky for the PNC Bank Bellarmine Classic (Feb. 2) hosted by Bellarmine.
The regular-season indoor portion of the schedule will conclude back in Nashville for the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt (Feb. 9-10) before the Racers compete at the MVC Indoor Championships (Feb. 25-26) in Chicago. The indoor portion of the season ends at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston, Massachusetts (Mar. 8-9).
"For outdoor, we are doing something unique compared to years past," Kiesler said. "Some events aren't contested at every meet, so we need to go a little further than normal to get those in."
The outdoor portion of the season starts at home for the Racers at the Margaret Simmons Invite in Murray (Mar. 22-23). MSU will then split teams at three separate events on March 28-30.
The events are the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, the Bobcat Invite in San Marcos, Texas, and the Joey Haines Invite in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. These three meets will be hosted by Texas, Texas State and Southeast Missouri State (SEMO).
"Going down to both meets in Texas will allow some specific event groups to get in some amazing competition early in the season," Kiesler added.
The following week's competition also splits the Racers between multiple events on the same day. Murray State will compete at both the South Florida Invite in Tampa, Florida and the Bill Cornell Invite in Carbondale, Ill. on April 6.
MSU looks to split teams for the John McDonnell Invite in Fayetteville, Arkansas and the Red Wolves Open in Jonesboro, Ark. (April 19-20). These events are being hosted by Arkansas and Arkansas State.
"Florida will be another amazing opportunity to see great competition," Kiesler said. "I am very excited to head to Arkansas. In my time here we haven't been, and getting to go to a place known for great track and field will be a great test and an amazing experience."Â
The outdoor regular season closes in Nashville at the Outdoor Music City Challenge (April 26-27) hosted by Vanderbilt. MSU then looks towards postseason competition at the MVC Outdoor Championships (May 10-12) in Terre Haute, Indiana.
The NCAA East Regional Preliminary Rounds (May 22-25) takes place in Lexington, Ky., and the final site for the NCAA Championships (June 5-8) will be hosted in Eugene, Oregon.
"Overall, we think both indoor and outdoor will be a great test of our whole roster," Kiesler said. "We look forward to getting started in Carbondale on the 2nd of December."
