MSU tops Ball State, but falls to Miami (OH) in nightcap

In A Nutshell
The Murray State softball team split a pair of games on the opening day of the Inaugural Velvet Milkman Invitational Friday at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky. The Racers won their first game of the day against Ball State, 4-3, but fell in game two to Miami (OH), 12-3.

Fast Facts

Lily Fischer drove in three of Murray State's four runs in the opener against Ball State with a two-RBI double in the fifth and a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the first.
Murray State led the game 4-2 after five innings and held on for the win despite a run by the Cardinals in the top of the sixth
Hannah James struck out five over 4.1 innings of work to start the game, but it was Jenna Veber that picked the win by allowing only one earned run and two hits over the game's final 2.2 innings.
Miami (OH) jumped out a 3-0 lead in the first, but the Racers battled back in the bottom of the frame thanks to an RBI-single by Gracie Osbron and a sac fly from Saxon Radcliffe to cut the deficit to one.
Despite a second RBI by Radcliffe for Murray State in the third, the Redhawks added two in the third, three in the fourth and four in the seventh to cruise to the 12-3 win.
Three different pitchers saw action in the game for Murray State, but it was the starter, Bre Haislip, that took the loss. The freshman pitched 2.2 innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

What's Next?
Day two of the Velvet Milkman Invitational at Racer Field on Saturday will see Murray State take on Ball State for a second time at 3:45 p.m., followed by Loyola Chicago at 6 p.m.
