The Murray State softball team opens its 2023 home slate Feb. 24-26 when it hosts the Inaugural Velvet Milkman Invitational at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky. The event will feature five teams playing 12 games over three days.
The Opponents
Ball State opened their season last weekend and went 2-3 at the Blazer Bash in Birmingham. Haley Wynn leads Ball State at the plate with a .529 average, three RBIs and two walks. Angelina Russo has been nearly untouchable the season as she is currently 2-0 with a 0.53 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP and an opponent's batting average of .163.
Bellarmine is currently 1-8 on the season after going 1-4 at the Furman Invitational last weekend. Alexis Hargrove is currently hitting .320 this season with four RBIs and two home runs. In the circle, Ellie Jensen is 1-1 with a 3.59 ERA and a .276 opponent's batting average.
Loyola Chicago is currently 4-7 and lost its last four games last week at the Texas Classic in Austin. Amelia Thomas leads the Ramblers with a .70 average, while Haley Wallace follows at .360. Peyton Pepkowski has a team-high 21 strikeouts in the circle and is 3-3 with a 2.66 ERA.
After starting the season 0-2, back-to-back MAC champions Miami (OH) are now 3-2 on the year. Allie Cummins helps lead Miami with a .467 average and eight RBIs. Brianna Pratt is 2-1 in the circle with a 2.47 ERA and 13 strikeouts.
Notes
•Murray State went 2-2 at the Troy Invitational beating Kennesaw State twice, but falling twice to Troy.
•Gracie Osbron celebrated her birthday in style Friday by hitting back-to-back home runs. She currently leads the team in home runs with three and RBI with 13.
•Taylor Jackson went 5-for-10 at the plate on the weekend with two runs and a RBI, while Osbron posted a team-high six RBIs on the weekend.
•Jenna Veber went 2-1 in Troy with a 1.50 ERA, an opponent's batting average of .154 with 14 strikeouts and only two walks.
•The Murray State pitching staff is currently averaging 7.5 strikeouts per seven innings so far this season through nine games. MSU has struck out 65 batters over 60.2 innings of work.
•Murray State's pitchers are currently ranked 16th nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio. The Racers are currently striking out 4.4 batters for every walk issued this season.
