Kayla Bell and Meghan Fletcher each received weekly honors for the first time in 2024.
Seniors Kayla Bell and Meghan Fletcher were selected as the Missouri Valley Conference Track and Field Athletes of the week, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.
Bell, who was won her second weekly award in as many meets competed in this season, was nominated after breaking two school records at the Commodore Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee. The Lynwood, Illinois native recorded the Murray State program indoor record in a first-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.73, a record that had been held for 25 years.
"We are extremely proud of Kayla opening the season up in the 800 with a school record," head coach Adam Kiesler said. "It was a goal of hers heading in to the season, so being able to check that box this early will allow her to move on to her other goals. We look forward to seeing her competing this weekend and the rest of the season."
Bell also contributed to breaking the school indoor record for the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:41.92 in a second-place finish just behind Illinois. MSU's indoor 4x400-meter relay record had been held since 1990 until Saturday's event.
Her 800 time is currently atop the Missouri Valley Conference and Division I Southeast Region rankings, as well as 10th in the country. Murray State's record 4x400 time leads the MVC, is third in the Southeast Region and top 20 in the country.
Meghan finished third in the women's high jump at the Commodore Challenge with a height of 1.76 meters (5' 9.25"), just .04 meters short of her personal best of 1.80 meters (5' 10.75") that was set at the 2023 MVC Indoor Championships. Her jump would be second all-time in indoor program history.
"Fletch has really become a competition in big moments," Kiesler added. "Testing herself against a really good field was great this early in the season. She has done a great job of raising the bar with her own expectations. Getting to see 1.80 early in the year, I hope, pays off down the line."
Fletcher's performance is currently first in The Valley, second in the Southeast Region and tied for 35th in the country.
