The Racers turned in a solid final round to win their home tournament, The Buddy Championship at Miller Memorial Golf Course
The Murray State men's golf posted a solid final round to win The Buddy Championship, their annual fall event at their home course, Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Kentucky.
After carding team scores of 276-280 for a 12-under-par 556 on Monday and building a nine-shot lead, the Racers posted a final round 278 (6-under) for an 834 total and a win of five shots over runner up Austin Peay at 839.
Â
Playing in honor of Murray State Hall of Famer, Coach Buddy Hewitt, who founded men's golf at MSU in 1961 and led the program with distinction and honor for 41 years, the Racers win their home event for the first time since 2019. The event wasn't played for three years between 2020-22.
"To get the win at our home course and honor Coach Buddy Hewitt is so special," said Murray State Head Coach Jacob Miller. "Also, for our seniors to put the work in and get the first team win in their careers, I am so happy for them and our program. We're looking forward to wrapping up the fall season at the Outer Banks this weekend!"
Â
Kamaren Cunningham and Jay Nimmo gave the Racers two top-5 finishers. Cunningham placed third (71-69-66=206) when he shot a 6-under 30 on the back nine by making eagle at the 14th and 17th holes. Nimmo was fourth (67-75-67=209) and MSU newcomer Rocco Zakutney placed seventh (69-68-75=212).
Â
Coach Hewitt was also a football legend who played on Murray State's 1948 team that won the inaugural Ohio Valley Conference championship and played in the Tangerine Bowl. Hewitt's golf teams won two OVC team titles, finished runner-up eight times and third-place five times. Coach Hewitt produced seven OVC medalist winners: Bill Graham (1962 & 63), Ron Acree (1965), Chris Pigott (1971), Kevin Klier (1977), Chris Carlson (1987) and Adam Grogan (1996). Hewitt retired in 2001, the same year he was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame. Coach Hewitt was 87 and three months from his Aug. 16 birthday when he passed away in Murray on May 15, 2015.

The Racers' final event of the fall season happens (Oct. 20-22) in Powell's Point, North Carolina at the Old Dominion-OBX Intercollegiate held at Kimarlic Golf Club. Â
