Volleyball Extinguishes Flames

Murray State defeated UIC in four sets.
The Murray State Racers (10-8, 5-4 MVC) defeated the UIC Flames (14-7, 6-3 MVC) 3-1 at Racer Arena on Saturday. Â
ÂThe win snaps a three-game losing streak and elevates the Racers to fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference while the Flames remain in third. Â
ÂThe Navy & Gold survived a long first set due to their efficient hitting, winning 26-24 with a .444 attacking percentage and finishing the set with a pair of kills by Darci Metzger. They kept their foot on the gas in the second set, winning 25-20 with a .297 attacking percentage and held the lead for the entire set. Â
ÂUIC fought back in the third, taking a 25-17 win, however, the Racers slammed the door in the fourth set with a 25-19 win that saw them lead for the entire set. Â
ÂThree different Racers recorded double-digit kills. Ella Vogel had a team-high 23, Darci Metzger had 14 and recorded a .455 attacking percentage, and Lily Burnett put up 12. Dahlia Miller led the team with 21 digs while Bailey DeMier had 12 and Federica Nuccio had 11. DeMier also led the team with 52 assists. Â
ÂThe Flames had three different players record double-digit kills. Cleo Lorenzen had 14, Kayanna Jones had 11, and Gabi peter had 10. Hannah Howard led the team with 18 digs and Francesca Venturini put up a team-high 30 assists. Â
Â"Of course I love it!" said head coach David Schwepker about his team's performance. "I didn't know how they were going to respond coming back from last night…but tonight I think they had a really good night."
ÂThe Racers are back in action at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, October 25 in Springfield, Mo. against Missouri State (8-13, 2-7 MVC). They play again the following day in Carbondale, Ill. against Southern Illinois (10-10, 3-6 MVC) at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, October 26.
